Safety Suggestions

These safety and security tips are intended to assist you in making your home less likely to experience significant problems if you decide to leave it empty for a period of time, even if only for a long weekend, and especially during winter months.

contact book

Be sure that one of your neighbours has a contact telephone number where you can be reached in the case of an emergency. If possible, also leave a local contact who can be reached in your absence.

hand giving key another hand

If possible, leave a key with a neighbour or a local contact so that your home can be accessed in the case of an emergency.

timer with a light bulb icon

Consider putting a light and/or radio on a timer so that there is the appearance that someone is at home during the time you’re away.

house insurance icon

Keep in mind that most insurance companies require that your house is visited at regular intervals during your absence. Be sure to check their requirements before you leave for an extended period of time.

hand washing icon

Consider turning off your water at the main valve before you leave. A leak could happen in summer or winter; however, winter poses special hazards with water should a furnace go out during a cold snap when no-one is at home.

water heater icon

As a corollary to before , furnaces should be serviced on a regular basis to minimize the possibility of them going out through mechanical failure. It’s a good idea to have the servicing done every year or two.

garage door with a car icon

You can prevent your garage door from inadvertently opening by disabling your automatic door opener simply by disconnecting the door opener (pull the plug out). With the automatic door opener disabled, no errant radio signal or short circuit in the opener’s electrical system will result in your garage door being left open while you are gone.

door with a lock icon

Be sure to lock the door between your garage and your home. This should be done always, even if you’re away for the day. If your garage door should open inadvertently, the door through to your home should be locked to prevent unwanted entry.

hand delivery icon

If you are planning to be away for an extended period, consider stopping all regular deliveries such as newspapers, postal service, bottled water, etc. The post office at the Terwilliger Shopping Centre can put a hold on your postal deliveries, or you can do it on-line.

eco house icon

Not a security tip, but you can reduce electrical consumption by lowering the setting on your hot water heater (some have a setting called “Vacation”) and your furnace during the time you are away.
